vizio-tv.jpgIt has been the rule since we first put electrons to work for us--the price of electronics will fall. So when I tell you TV and monitor prices are about fall again you shouldn't be surprised. However, I smiled broadly when I read the headline in Eric Taub's NY Times Bits blog: "TV Prices Falling Faster," because there's no better adjective to place next to "falling" than "faster!"

Taub's source was the Austin, TX based, but internationally savvy, DisplaySearch, "created in 1996 to deliver highly insightful reports, conferences and consulting specifically focused on the display supply chain and display-related industries."

DisplaySearch sees a slow economy and weak demand as the primary reasons for the expected drop. No surprise there. The surprise is with these expected price drops the selling price for LCD panels will be around, or in some cases less than, the manufacturing cost. You can't sell for low profit, or even loss, for long. That means for the short term this drop will be followed by price stability. In other words, once Black Thursday's deals are up don't bother waiting for prices to plunge at this rate much longer.

The Times figures these will be typical prices this winter:

  • 19-inch high definition LCD: $199
  • 32-inch HD LCD: $399-$499
  • 40-inch 1080p LCD: $799-$999
  • 42-inch HD plasma: $599-$699
  • 50-inch HD plasma: $899-$999

If you've got the cash this will be a merry and higher resolution Christmas.

Ooh! Maybe this year is the year to pick up a nice HDTV! :D

Sounds great! The need to start mass production and hard economic times may converge to make this winter prime time for HDTV. I've wanted a big flat screen for a long time--maybe now I can get one without going into debt past my chin!

Maybe everyone else will follow Vizio's lead and start making quality tvs for reasonable prices that don't bankrupt the general population. If they can deliver on high quality picture, 120hz and 1080p for a good price why do all the other brands have to gouge us?
