sonimsmall1.jpg Earlier this month we announced that the Sonim XP3, a super-rugged GSM phone, would soon be coming to the US. Sonim just wrote to us with an update, saying that the phone will be available to more people in more places than we thought before. The XP3 is still coming out in early 2009.

"To reach people interested in their rugged products, Sonim will target rural GSM carriers, outdoors stores, retail chains where contractors have open accounts, warehouse clubs where businesses buy, and large enterprises such as utilities and package-delivery companies," the company said.

So even if you don't live in a rural area, try your local big-box store early next year for this super-rugged gadget. For full details on the XP3, see our earlier post.

Mitzi, they will definitely work with AT&T and you can use your existing contract.

I bought one and it only worked some of the time because it didn't have the right (both) frequencies for AT&T.

I have seen a couple reviews (touted by Sonim) claiming the phone will be quad-band. However, the actual Sonim website claims triband. (http://www.sonimxp3.com/en/features_technical_specifications)

Furthermore, some of the same reviews claimed amazing talk time (2.5 days, 2 months standby) while the Sonim website mentioned above claims a more normal battery life.

I suppose there is a chance the US based XP3 Enduro will be different from the one on the Sonim Website...but I am now unsure about what we will see when the phone comes out!

Please, at least let it quad-band!

You are correct, Alex: that Web site is for the European version. The US version will be different, and the US version will not be advertised until it is available in the US. That's not until the beginning of 2009, according to Sonim.

I have been following this phone for a bit, and 2.5 days of talk time + all this ruggedness would be awesome.
Take it snowboarding, hiking, mountain bikeing.
I'm excited to get one.
