It's named like an iPod competitor, but the $8,899 Piaggio MP3 500 scooter offers a unique commuting option for anyone interested in averaging around 45 mpg on a daily basis. AutoWeek snagged one for a long term test, finding that its 493-cc, 40-hp, 31-lb-ft, four-stroke one-cylinder engine and 538 pound-weight make it ideal for short trips, if not all-out freeway cruising—particularly due to its dual front wheels.
So what's up with those? According to the report, the dual front wheels provide significantly improved stability and "road presence." In addition, an electro-hydraulic locking mechanism allows the scooter to stand upright while at low speeds or when stopped, the report said, making it free of the wobbly feel and bizarre parking maneuvering associated with most motorcycles (at least when compared to a regular car). They said it takes practice, and can't be done with a passenger, but it works for just parking the scooter without having to use a kickstand.
