B2 miJam Laser Light Show

Although it's not brand-new, we received a b2 miJam Laser Light Show to try out: It's a speaker system that projects music-synchronized light effects. Despite the suggestive packaging and iPod-friendly white enclosure, the combination speaker/dancing laser device does not include an Apple dock connector: You plug iPods and any other music source with a headphone jack into its 3.5mm audio line-in cable. The cable is far from unsightly, but the lack of a dock connector makes the device less appealing to clean-interface-loving iPod fanatics.

About 8 inches in diameter, the spherical device can be configured to project a moving laser beam on either a ceiling or wall. With some upbeat music and a dark room, the Laser Light Show can provide (at most) a few minutes of entertainment for anyone unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of this potential holiday gift.

The built-in laser seems no more powerful than those used for pointing during presentations. It projects a pulsating beam on the ceiling several inches long when the miJam is placed on the floor--not several feet long, as the graphics on the box suggest.

The Laser Light Show plays music in two modes--with or without the laser show--and includes a volume control dial. This lets you turn off the sound completely, leaving just the light show. The speakers are only slightly more powerful than those in my laptop, so playing music with the miJam at parties is out of the question anyway.

The combo device is powered by either four AA batteries or the included AC adapter, and is available from Toys "R" Us for $49.99. Unless you come upon an amazing deal on the miJam, though, I'd put that money to better use on speakers that actually pump out decent sound. The only one who might be impressed by the miJam's laser show is my cat.
