China's Zhejiang 001 Group has built a solar-powered car that will cost just $5,560 (at today's exchange rates) and achieve a 150-kilometer (93-mile) range on a single charge, according to Engadget. As you can see in the photos, the current version of the car could use a little work when it comes to integrating the solar panels properly. But there's some interesting tech going on underneath the surface.
The solar panels absorb 95% of the solar energy they receive and convert it to electricity at a rate of somewhere between 14 and 17 percent efficiency, the report said. According to the company, that's good for the stated 150 kilometer range, although it takes a whopping 30 hours to charge up the panels. If you charge them for one hour, you'll only get five kilometers out of the car, which is barely enough for a trip to the local 7-Eleven. The report said that the company produced ten of them so far; no word on a release date in terms of mass production.
