Rumors are swirling that GM is actively considering shoehorning its latest 4.5L Duramax V-8 turbodiesel engine into the second-generation Cadillac CTS, Motor Trend reports. Apparently it fits just fine—providing that Cadillac replaces the hood with the one from the CTS-V.

The report said that GM engineers have long insisted that the dual overhead cam, four-valve diesel V-8, originally designed for the automaker's trucks, will fit in the same space as a small-block gasoline V-8.

The engine is a beauty, too. It features "aluminum cylinder heads with integrated manifolding and a variable-vane turbocharger mounted in the vee," according to the report. It's also capable of delivering more than 310 hp and in excess of 520 lb-ft of torque; GM claims the engine already meets tough 2010 emissions standards, meaning that it could be a 50-state legal diesel in the vein of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel and the new Mercedes BlueTECs.
