RIM released their first flip BlackBerry today, the 8220 Pearl Flip for T-Mobile, and I got severely concerned when I saw how buggy the software was. The Pearl Flip is an impressive piece of hardware: sharp screen, nice big SureType keys, and an innovative way of letting you preview your messages on the outside of the flip. There's a ton of excellent software on there too, including six IM clients and a Microsoft Office document editor.
Unfortunately, our model was very buggy. Check the the screen at left, which I got by rebooting, receiving a call on a Bluetooth headset and flipping the phone closed. The Web browser, especially, was an utter mess, refusing to load some pages even after five minutes because of bugs in the JavaScript implementation. I just can't recommend that people buy buggy phones. I'm hoping that RIM improves the software over the next month or so, and works out the bugs. When they do, I'm hoping to re-review the phone and upgrade its 2.5* rating.
Check out my review on PCMag.com for my full assessment of the Flip.
