Audi confirmed that the A3 2.0 TDI will be available stateside, possibly as soon as in the fall of 2009 for the 2010 model year, according to Next Autos. The car will be available as a front-driver only, and feature the same 140 hp engine block in the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel.
VW's diesel technology is notable since it doesn't require the use of urea injection to clean up its emissions, since it produces lower amounts of nitrogen oxide, as the report indicated.
A second article on AutoblogGreen claimed a different Audi spokesperson categorically denied that the A3 TDI will come to the states. But it seems like a foregone conclusion to me given that all the hardware already exists. It would be a great way for Audi to test the market and see if buyers snap up the A3 diesel and then come looking for bigger, more luxurious diesel Audis (which are plentiful in Europe).
