KDDI's 3D LCD Panel
Japanese telco KDDI showcased an OLED and a 3D LCD panel meant for cells phones in CEATEC 2008. The 3D LCD panel you see above was developed by KDDI along with an unnamed Japanese panel manufacturer. The panel is capable of displaying WVGA images and employs a 3D technique called "parallax barrier method." Said method arranges strip-shaped barriers on the LCD's surface with parts viewable by either eye, creating the 3D effect. According to KDDI, the panel can convert 2D to 3D in real time.
The other panel showcased is a 3-inch OLED screen (pictured below) developed by Korean company Samsung that uses a pixel array called "PenTile" by Clairvoyante Inc. The panel KDDI displayed on CEATEC displays QVGA (400x240) images, but Samsung has already developed 3.1-inch WVGA (800x480) OLED panels for cell phones. KDDI aims to commercialize the 3D LCD panels by late 2009; no news on when the OLED panels will see a release.
