Mercedes-Benz is launching a tweaked S-class version of its popular line of BlueTEC diesel cars, calling it the S320 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, Autoblog reports. The new 3.0-liter model includes a seven-speed automatic transmission that decouples itself at idle, low-rolling-resistance tires, and power steering assist that stops working whenever it's not needed.
The company said in a statement that detailed modifications and advanced technology have enabled the manufacturer to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by some ten per cent compared to its predecessor. The company said that the car should average about 31 mpg, compared with 29 mpg for the automaker's S400 BlueHYBRID. No word yet on whether or not Mercedes-Benz plans to sell this car in the United States. (31 mpg for a car that size? Bring it over, I say.)
