To alleviate safety concerns for its diminutive iQ, Toyota announced today that it has developed an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) rear window curtain shield airbag in order to protect rear passengers' heads in the event of a rear-end collision, AutoblogGreen reports. That's because a very small car wouldn't get much impact protection out of traditional safety measures, such as crumple zones that absorb the kinetic energy from a crash.
In a company statement, Toyota said that the new airbag deploys from the roof lining above the rear window in the form of a curtain-like barrier. Together with the headrests, the airbag minimizes impact to the head, either from a colliding vehicle or scattered parts from the hit car. The report said that the iQ should be appearing in final production form this week at the Paris Motor Show.
