The SynergyNet Multi-Touch Desk System was borne out of classroom teacher-student interaction observation by researchers from Durham University's Technology-Enhanced Learning Research Groups. Thinking how ICT (Information Communications Technology) could improve class participation and collaboration, the researchers worked with respective manufacturers to develop the necessary and software and hardware. The SynergyNet system is comprised of the multi-touch desks "that look and act like a large version of an Apple iPhone" and a panel or smartboard where the teacher could see what each student is doing. A handful of students can work on a single multi-touch screen display.
Dr. Liz Burd, lead researcher from Durham, describes SynergyNet system as "... very similar to the type of interface shown as a vision of the future in the TV series Star Trek!" It could also reportedly be the way for girls to be more participative when it comes to IT wherein, according to Durham's studies, males remain dominant. In the future, we could do away with whiteboards inside the classroom altogether. For now though, SynergyNet is slated to be tested in schools of all levels within the next four years after which, the software will be offered as a free open source code for schools.
