Toyota plans to display a compressed natural gas-hybrid version of its top-selling Camry family sedan at the Los Angeles auto show this coming November, AutoWeek reports, in a move that will further extend Toyota's foray into alternative fuel vehicles.
"Using compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of gasoline to fuel the engine," said Irv Miller, group vice president for corporate communications, in the article, "highlights the fuel's growing emergence as a domestic energy source in abundant supply.
Miller said that development of a CNG distribution infrastructure in the United States is ahead of that for hydrogen, with 1.8 million miles of pipeline currently in play. He said that the supply also is readily available; it's not something that is dependent on imports or the creation of new refining methods that aren't currently available.
Recently, Toyota has also indicated plans to create an entire
family of Prius hybrids around the now-famous brand. Toyota currently sells the Prius and the Camry Hybrid as its two main alternative fuel cars.
