It's been a open question exactly how Porsche would rise to the challenge of new federally mandated fuel economy standards, but here's one piece of the puzzle: Motor Trend reports that the carmaker is accelerating its move toward more efficient direct injection engines, with the Boxster S and Cayman S as the latest candidates.
This being Porsche, the new technology will not only result in a 10 percent bump in fuel efficiency—15 percent for automanual-style PDK transmission-equipped models—but also an increase in horsepower as well. The Cayman S block stays at 3.4 liters but goes from 295 to 320 horsepower, while the Boxster S moves from 295 to 310 horsepower. The base models stick with port injection, the report said, but will also receive horsepower bumps. All Caymans and Boxsters will receive mild styling updates, and tantalizingly, revised screens and ergonomics for the car's infotainment system.
