Peugeot has unveiled a diesel-electric racer that the company plans to run in next year's Le Mans series, Autopia reports. The Peugeot 908 HDi FAP "Hy" took a few turns around the track last weekend; the car includes a separate 80 hp electric motor and lithium-ion batteries in addition to its diesel block.
"As a car manufacturer, we can use motor sport as a research and development tool for the Peugeot brand as a whole," said Michel Barge, director of Peugeot Sport, in a company statement. "Running a hybrid car in endurance racing would give Peugeot the chance to gain extremely valuable experience that would benefit the development of production cars." The report said that questions still remain as to how exactly the governing bodies at Le Mans will classify the car, and whether or not it will be able to race.
