When Sam Jilbert conceived the Honda Cub fuel cell concept, it was merely a school project for his Transportation Design course at Northumbria University and perhaps a tribute to Spielberg's sci-fi thrillers like i-Robat and The Minority Report. But with the growing demand for sustainable transportation the Club might actually go from concept to reality, tapped by Honda and Yamaha for their electric motorcycle projects.
According to Edmunds Green Car Advisor, Yamaha aims to launch battery-powered bikes by 2010 with a range of 60 miles, while Honda, the world's largest motorcycle maker, plans to put out its own electric two-wheelers the following year. With an eye on fleet operations, Honda is even considering "replacing its 90,000 gas-powered motorcycles with electric models."
Both companies have yet to release battery info. It is also unclear whether or not Jilbert's concept will actually be used. One thing's for sure: the Club's clean, functional design is hard to ignore.
