Envia, the electric vehicle conversion company, announced that its plug-in conversion kit for the Ford F150 Hybrid, called REV-H, offers fleet customers up to 48 miles per gallon and lowers carbon emissions by 63%, according to Next Energy News. The company is targeting fleets due to the kit's particular design.
"Plug-in hybrid cars take power off the electric-grid at night when demand is low and use it to charge a large battery," the report said. "The cars can then operate as pure Electric Vehicles at lower speeds, which dramatically reduces gas consumption and carbon emissions. This is ideal for many of the 30 million fleet vehicles in North America, which operate over shorter distances in cities."
It's difficult to argue with that logic. The report said that while there soon will be plug-in versions of the Prius and the Saturn Vue (by 2010), along with the upcoming Chevy Volt, those cars will feature comparatively small batteries and short electric range. The REV-H conversion for the Ford F-150 Hybrid costs $15,000 to $25,000 depending on range, which "fleet managers can justify over 5 years with the reduced fuel and maintenance costs."

Plug-in hybrid technology holds great promise to reduce the nation's dependence on petroleum and reduce CO² emissions related to climate change, both significant issues for America.
