openphone.jpg You're looking at the first consumer fruit of Verizon's "Open Development" initiative, a $69 voice-and-texting phone from a prepaid wireless company called AirVoice. During his keynote this morning Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam showed off this phone (and a separate EVDO-to-Wi-Fi router) which he said got through Verizon's approval processes in under four weeks and will be potentially on sale soon.

We don't know much else about this gadget. AirVoice is a prepaid wireless provider that contracts with larger carriers, such as Verizon and AT&T, to provide service on their networks. They're currently selling an oddball range of phones on their Web site.

Verizon's Open Development policy is designed to speed up approvals for folks who want to use different CDMA devices on Verizon's network. In the past, Verizon has said that the new initiative is mostly for machine-to-machine devices, and McAdam did say he was looking for "every thermostat in the house [to have] a connection to the network, every appliance in the house, and your heating and ventilation." But it's interesting to see the system being used as a quick way for smaller wireless companies to get exclusive phones onto their borrowed Verizon network minutes.
