Chrysler vice chairman and president Jim Press said that some dealers have seen advanced prototypes of the company's plug-in hybrid, Autopia reports, but details are few and far between as to exactly what the automaker is up to.
For example, according to the Los Angeles Times, Press claims to have actually "driven producible prototypes" that have a range of 300 miles and can do 0-60 in less than four seconds, the report said—although there's still no evidence whatsoever that they're nearing production, or that they even exist, for that matter.
Chrysler's Envi unit is a separate division that develops fuel efficient powertrains for the automaker. It appears that the Envi unit is responsible for what you see above. However, the report said that the first prototype will likely have a range of 40 miles before the gas engine kicks in, which is exactly what the Volt promises. The thing is, the Volt will get here in 2010, while Chrysler's predicting anywhere from late 2011 to 2013 for this one.
