Brushing paint on canvas isn't the only way to create artwork. Luminodot is a bit avant-garde compared to conventional paintings, but it's actually more of a high-tech shiny toy to satiate your inner child. According to technabob, it's like an improved steroid-addled Lite-Brite. Manufactured by Bandai Japan, the frame can accommodate 3,500 light pegs, although the Luminodot ships with only 1600 of those little pins in 12 different colors. You can buy some more light pegs if you want to fill the whole board, and it could be worth it if you're going for a grand full-scale lighting effect.
The LED backlight provides the illumination and even has 25 animated light patterns to choose from to add some sparkle, literally, on your design. There are already a handful of patterns included you can follow but you can buy some more as well, OR you can create a custom pixel picture via an online simulator. Unfortunately, it's only available in Japan for now (for $96), although you might find a unit of Luminodot or two over eBay.
This does not sound like a new idea to me. I remeber playing with something like this when i was a kid. It was basically little clear/coloured plastic pegs that you would make a picture with and then you could switch it on and make it light up. The thing was powered by D-Cell batteries.
