Apple today confirmed that much-speculated-about press conference, set to occur next week. The company sent out an invitation for the event, which is scheduled for September 9th at 10 AM PDT.

The early-September press conference has become something of a tradition around Apple headquarters. The company generally uses the event to announce updates to the iPod line, (this is hinted at by the message's accompanying artwork, which reads in part, "Let's rock").

So, what exactly is Apple announcing? As always, any speculation before the event as occurs is just that, but here are a few of our best guesses, after the jump.

--A larger, horizontal screen on the iPod nano. Get ready to say goodbye to the lukewarmly received "fat" nano, and hello to a more Zune-like orientation.
--Higher-capacity iPod touches. 64GB, anyone?
--Price drops across the iPod touch line.
--The end of the spinning-hard-drive-based iPod...? Our guess is that this will be the iPod Classics's death-rattle, as Flash-based players continue to bulk up.

How exciting! However, they'd better keep the mega-high storage up. I mean, I'd love a flash-based player (and the Touch I got free with my MacBook is incredible), but my 160GB classic is full. Maybe a 320GB, anyone? THAT would be sexy. And totally worth the archaic hard-drive system.

I be they finally launch a subscription service. They made a ton of money with pay-per-track, but the tide is turning. They need to incorporate Internet Radio and a decent subscription service. If they do that, their hold on the market will remain unbreakable.
