A resourceful Ariel Atom fan decided to try building a copy of one on his own, rather than forking over $50,000 for an example of the real thing. 15 months and 800 hours of garage work later, it looks like he made off like a bandit, according to MAKE.
The anonymous designer—a college student that goes by the Flickr name Proximacentauri—calls his car the Z59. Many of the Z59's parts are recycled from discarded junk. For example, the car's stainless panels were from old appliances, the report said. "The black body panels came from an ancient kayak and an old doghouse. The throttle pedal was made entirely from salvaged parts from a dumpster at an engineering firm around town. Of course, the engine was also recycled from a crashed car" —specifically, a base model Acura RSX.
As a result, the impressive DIY creation hits 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds, and is also capable (when driven more slowly) of achieving an average of 35 mpg, according to its owner. Nice work.
