The Zero X, from Zero Motorcycles, is an EV that's available right now for $7,450—and it's a real motorcycle, as Autopia reports. It weighs just 140 pounds with the lithium-ion battery, which is about half what the average 250cc Honda or Yamaha weighs. Best of all, its tiny 23-horsepower motor is good for 57 mph, and it will "leave a fat streak of rubber on the pavement getting there."
Neil Saiki, the founder of Zero Motorcycles and the designer of the Zero X, said in the interview that EVs are the future, that riders must be more environmentally responsible, and that the dirt racing sport's future is in jeopardy, mainly due to the noise. He pointed out that in addition to being virtually silent, EVs are great for their low-end torque—an ideal attribute in racing—and their limited range doesn't matter since these bikes are rarely used for long trips.
The battery charges up in about two hours, which gives you about the same amount of riding time. A spare battery can be purchased for a whopping $2,950 in case you need one. Look for a street version next year at a slightly higher price—$9,000—that will hit 70 mph and last 60 miles on a charge.
