Televisions may be flying off the shelves, but U.S. sales of mobile phone handsets declined about 13 percent over the last year, according to a Tuesday report from The NPD Group.

"Quarterly unit-sales of handsets fell to their lowest level, since NPD begin tracking the category in 2005," Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD, said in a statement. "Even so, most major manufacturers picked up market share that was lost by Motorola."

Motorola maintained its lead in the U.S. market during the first quarter with 21 percent, but just barely. Its market share dropped six percentage points from the first quarter, and it was down 11 percent from Q2 2007, when it was at 32 percent.

Competitors LG Electronics, Research in Motion, and Samsung all gained market share as Motorola declined, according to NPD. For the second quarter, Samsung and LG now have a 20 percent market share in the U.S., followed by Nokia with 9 percent and RIM's BlackBerry with 7 percent.

Phones sold in the second quarter were "more feature-rich" than those sold last year. Handsets with a QWERTY keyboard saw the greatest increase over last year, up from 12 percent to 28 percent. Smartphones were also up from 9 percent to 19 percent.
