As Sascha noted yesterday, carriers are beginning to support the growing user outcry about iPhone 3G reception problems. T-Mobile Netherland's blog even went so far as to suggest that "intensive research nasty," according to Sascha's (likely poor) Babelfish translation.

Apple, for their part, is skirting the issue, or, on occasion, attempting to put some of the blame on the carriers--like AT&T, here in the US. But if the iPhone uses different carriers across the globe, one imagines that at least some of the fault falls squarely in the hands of Apple--or more specifically, a bad batch of iPhones now in the wild.

Since the company has, as is often the case, been less than forthcoming, the rest of us are left to our devices. One Swedish researcher--who wishes to remain anonymous--popped open one of the handsets and now claims that he's discovered that the iPhone is less sensitive to 3G signals than other handset.

The decreased signal sensitivity has, he claims, apparently lead to slower dataspeeds.

All I know is that my 3G reception is horrible, and I drop calls like a stripper's panties. The guy at the Apple Genius Bar last night actually told me to SHUT OFF 3G, and "just run on EDGE". I am not joking, this is the official advice coming out of Apple retail stores. Right, jerkweed, that's what I bought a 3G phone for - so I could turn it off.

Apple is coming across as mildly, if not, significantly retarded with their handling of this issue. This is my first Apple experience, and likely my last.

Thanks for $300 brick, morons.

@Me: A software fix for a hardware problem? I'd say the folks at CNet need to check out this report, not the other way around. ;)

Frankly though, Apple has managed to fix hardware problems with software fixes before, here's hoping iPhone owners will get a sweet surprise when the fix comes.

I have to admit though that I'm entertained that the carriers are saying the problems are with the hardware...couldn't POSSIBLY be with their networks, no WAY! /sarcasm

I ended up taking my iPhone back to AT&T & canceling my service.. I just couldn't deal with the terrible 3G, 2 small case cracks, program lags & no copy/paste function. Mainly, I refuse to pay extra for a data plan that I never was able to take advantage of.
I really thought about buying an iPod touch but I just can't give Apple any more of my money for a while.
