The 2008 Outlander, a crossover SUV from Mitsubishi, was recognized as a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) last week. The nod of approval was the result of favorable scores in three separate crash tests performed at the IIHS's Vehicle Research Center (VRC).
The Institute's Top Safety Picks are comprised of the vehicles that have earned a rating of good, based on results of front and side crash tests plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against whiplash injury in rear crashes. In addition to its overall capability to withstand collisions, the Outlander is equipped with standard electronic stability control and side airbags. The crash test watchdog evaluated the 2008 model. However, since the upcoming Outlander inherited most of its predecessor's underpinnings, the high safety marks will apply to the 2009 model as well.
"When you add Outlander's superior crash protection to its combination of styling, performance, fuel efficiency, and value, it doesn't take a back seat to any vehicle in the crossover segment," said EVP of Sales and Marketing Dan Kuhnert. "We're extremely pleased that the IIHS has confirmed our commitment to safety."
Other best performers, earning the Institute's Top Safety Pick award, are the 2009 Ford Escape, 2008 Nissan Rogue, and 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan.
