Looking for a portable navigation unit that's good for both driving directions as well as in the great outdoors on foot? Garmin has jumped into the emerging crossover GPS niche, which the Magellan CrossoverGPS previously occupied by itself. Our sister publication PC Magazine has reviewed the $499 Garmin nüvi 500, calling it a "good crossover choice for those who don't want or can't afford separate dedicated automotive and outdoor enthusiast GPS devices."
The review said that the unit is not only IPX7-rated waterproof, but it also includes topographic maps and can integrate with Geocaching.com. On the downside, while it offers spoken turn-by-turn driving directions like all recent portable nav devices, it doesn't do text-to-speech conversion for street names. It also lacks Bluetooth phone integration. Read the full review here for more information.
