KTM, a company better known for its dirt racing bikes than cars, plans to bring its 240 horsepower X-Bow race car to America and make it street legal, according to Autopia. The car features a tuned version of the Volkswagen GTI's 2.0 liter, turbocharged four cylinder engine. "We need the support of the VW/Audi Group and we need to overcome some legal hurdles regarding licensing, but at the end of the day we want to see this vehicle on the streets of America," said Hubert Trunkenpolz, managing director of U.S. sales and service.
There's plenty of tech in this beast, too. The X-Bow features a carbon-fiber single-shell chassis with a finished weight of just 1,543 pounds—about 500 pounds less than the Spartan Lotus Elise SC, the report said. "The chassis produces enough downforce to achieve 1.5-g cornering loads, and the X-Bow accelerates from zero to 62 mph (100 kph) in 3.92 seconds." If anything, consider the X-Bow an example of how little power and fuel one needs to reach incredible speeds if the car is light enough in the first place. The cars cost about $70K in Europe so far; no word yet on a final U.S. price.
