Hyundai is close to a decision on whether to bring a new small car to the United States, according to Automotive News. The car is about the same size as a Mini Cooper; Hyundai said it may source the car from India instead of manufacturing it.
According to the report, Hyundai insiders say that the i10, a five-door hatchback, went on sale last October in 70 countries. The car is currently produced in Chennai, India and gets up to 56 mpg. In the U.S., we could see the car with either a Hyundai or Kia badge. "We're really watching sales of the Smart car," said a Hyundai source who asked not to be identified in the article. "If the Smart does well, we will probably definitely get this car."
The i10 is 140 inches long. That's 34 inches longer than the Smart ForTwo, 17 inches shorter than the Honda Fit, and about five inches shorter than the current Mini Cooper. The i10 weighs just 1,898 pounds with a five speed manual, which is about the same weight as the Smart ForTwo (which has an automatic); however, the source said that it would need about 400 pounds of extra equipment and other gear to bring it up to U.S. safety standards.
