Leapfrog's Leapster2 (ages 4-8), an update to its popular Leapster handheld gaming gadget, offers a number of new features including SD card support, improved graphics, and USB connection to your PC. Kids (or their parents) can connect the Leapster2 to their computer and download new games, play online, and cash in game rewards. Like the Tag Reader, the Leapster2 is compatible with Leapfrog's Learning Path, which will go live in September. New games are backwards compatible with the old Leapster, and older games will play on the Leapster2, so parents don't have to worry about replacing games they currently own. (Phew.)
I tried out the Leapster2 on a recent subway commute and found it quite engaging. The handheld comes with an onboard game in which dragons fight an enemy who wants to turn the world black and white. Your job is to collect numbers so you can save the colorful world. The Leapster2's touch screen--accessed with the attached stylus was very responsive, and I had no trouble with the interface or buttons.
I like that the device has a dedicated pause button when you need a break, as well as volume and mute controls to keep the games sounds at bay. There's also an earphone jack, great for use in the car or a quiet environment such as a library. The device itself is easy to grip and seems sturdy enough to withstand the occasional drop or knock. I also played a little Jedi Math, which was surprisingly fun--you get to use your math skills to rescue prisoners, unlock doors, and win light saber battles.
When you connect the Leapster2 (via USB) to your PC, kids can play online games, noodle around with an art studio application and display their work in their own gallery. Parents (or kids) will soon be able to download games to their handheld as well, provided they have an SD card installed. The card slot is located underneath a screw-on panel that also houses the 4 AA batteries.
The Leapster2 is available in pink or green, for $69.99, on Leapfrog's online store. Games cost about $20 each.
