GM engineers are currently testing the new Chevrolet Camaro with the Pontiac Solstice's turbocharged four-cylinder engine, AutoWeek reports, as the venerable automaker looks for a way to offer spirited performance and improved fuel economy in today's market. GM product chief Bob Lutz revealed the experiment at the London motor show.
Lutz said in the report that the 260-hp turbocharged engine gave little benefit compared with the current base car's 300-hp 3.6-liter V-6. "The power was similar, the vehicle was the same, so not surprisingly, the fuel economy was also very similar," said Lutz. The new base Camaro achieves an EPA-rated 26 mpg average with the V-6, while the turbo Solstice (which is a bit lighter) achieves 28 mpg according to the EPA.
