Edmunds recently compared a Toyota Camry Hybrid to a Prius, but now they've done another comparison that I think makes plenty of sense: the Prius vs. a garden variety Honda Fit, which costs $8,400 less given similar equipment. The result? You wouldn't save money on the Prius unless you drove it for more than 15 years.
There's not much to disagree with in the article; the Honda Fit is an economical car that returned 28 mpg, while the Prius returned a stellar 42 mpg in comparison. But as I mentioned back in June in the MPG "math trick" article, trading an economical car for a more-economical one doesn't save nearly as much money as, say, trading a gas guzzling SUV for a moderately economical sedan. In other words, you could do a lot worse than buying a basic Corolla, Fit, Civic, or other small sedan, even without all the hybrid technology. (Say it isn't so!)
