Chrysler's uConnect Web, the roving wireless Internet access system first announced in June, will be officially available beginning August 25th from Chrysler dealerships as a Mopar accessory, CrunchGear reports. The price will be $499, which is $50 higher than was originally reported, though monthly fees will remain the same at $29 per month. (Expect to pay an additional $70 to $85 for installation and activation).
The Wi-Fi hotspot router will be compatible with all 2009 Chrysler vehicles and certain earlier-year models, the report said. Customers can order new cars with the device already installed, or bring older ones in to be retrofitted if they're compatible.
The router works by hooking into both EV-DO and (sparsely available) WiMAX networks. The CEO of Autonet Mobile, which supplies the device to Chrysler, said in the report that the router could be converted for use on multiple cellular networks. It's going to be either Sprint or Verizon, obviously, since those are the only two in the U.S. that use EV-DO (along with Alltel, which Verizon has now swallowed whole).
