Chrysler announced Wednesday that it would spend $1.8 billion to retool one of the company's manufacturing plants in Detroit to making more fuel-efficient, car-based crossovers in lieu of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the New York Times reports. The article called the move "the latest sign of the burial of the era of the SUV."
Some of the new offerings will include a unibody Jeep Grand Cherokee with a more fuel efficient V6, a hybrid powertrain, and a clean diesel powertrain for some of the company's pickup trucks. The move comes as sales of the regular Grand Cherokee fell 48 percent in July, and as Chrysler's overall United States market share fell below nine percent.
