It's a question many folks are wondering: is it possible to build an electric car? GreenCar.com has posted five key facts about the idea. Most importantly, that's the only way you can get one right now: no major manufacturer makes one, aside from specialty shops building low-speed neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) that are limited to 25 mph or 35 mph, depending on where they are used.
The report also said that most electric car projects are gas-car conversions, thousands of people have done it over the past 100 years, it requires a ton of planning, and that scrounging around for parts usually saves lots of money over buying state-of-the-art components that don't necessarily improve things all that much. On the other hand, the scrounging approach means you may run into some headaches getting everything to work together. "For instance, will the circa-2005 controller work with a 1970s-era electric motor? Probably not," the report said. Good stuff.
