GM is set to roll out a range of new innovations in their drivetrains, Motor Authority reports, including hybrid systems, turbochargers and superchargers, various powertrain weight reductions, and other technologies such as HCCI—all aimed at curbing fuel consumption.
In fact, GM plans to launch 16 new models in the next four years. One of those is the Chevy Volt, which we've written about plenty of times already. But other cars will include HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), which can switch between different modes to reach near-diesel levels of fuel consumption. The company is also working on smaller, lighter gas engines with 6-speed transmissions that maximize fuel economy, as well as a new diesel block for passenger cars and another one for trucks.
