Now I'm jealous: Popular Mechanics test drove the 2008 Audi TT 2.0 clean diesel over in the UK and came away impressed. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the TT diesel is connected to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine employs twin camshafts, four valves per cylinder and a variable geometry turbocharger in order to deliver the goods—in this case, some pretty sporting performance, along with an average fuel economy of 39 mpg.
"Common-rail fuel injection is used in pulse mode to remove the heavy combustion knock traditionally associated with compression ignition engines," the report said. It's all enough for 168 hp at 4200 RPM, 258 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm (gotta love those flat-torque-curve Audis), a 0-60 of 7.5 seconds, and a top speed of 140 mph. That's not bad given the fuel economy numbers the magazine observed. So when are we getting the diesel TT over here? Is anyone at Audi listening?
