Verizon officially launched its FiOS television service in New York City on Monday, rolling out the fiber-optic network to 108 neighborhoods in the five boroughs.

Only about 300,000 of the city's approximately 8 million residents will have access this week, but "by the end of this year, we'll build out fiber-optic network to service more than three million homes and businesses in New York City," Virginia Ruesterholz, president of Verizon Telecom, said during a press conference.

Among the FiOS packages available is one for $94.99 that includes FiOS Internet with 20 Mbps downstream and 10 Mbps upstream, phone service with unlimited local calling, and FiOS TV service. Verizon also announced that FiOS TV will feature 100 high-definition channels starting Monday in all of its markets (list after the jump), working up to 150 channels by year's end. FiOS TV is currently available in parts of 13 states.

Verizon is expected to complete its FiOS TV build out in New York City by 2014. New York's Franchise and Concession Review Committee approved a cable franchising deal for Verizon in May that calls on the company to have FiOS availability in 57 percent of Manhattan, 13 percent of the Bronx, 15 percent of Queens, 12 percent of Brooklyn, and 98 percent of Staten Island by the end of 2008.

The company has already been installing FiOS cable in the city, but has thus far only been allowed to offer Internet service, not cable TV, because cable providers are required to reach cable franchising deals with every city in which they want to offer service.

The nature of fiber-optic network installation also requires Verizon to reach deals with the owners of apartments and other buildings in New York City before moving in. The company has thus far installed about six million feet of fiber in New York, said Maura Breen, Verizon general manager for New York.

The company started wiring Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, one of Manhattan's largest apartment complexes, in March and all of the residents in its 110 buildings are now wired, Breen said.

"We completed this more than 100 days ahead of schedule and today, every resident has fiber-optic capability," she said.

Verizon is currently in discussions with "hundreds of other building owners," according to Breen. Residents can check Verizon's Web site to see if their neighborhood or building is FiOS-ready.

Current Verizon FiOS HD channels include: ABC Family HD, Action Max, Action Max West, At Max, Bio. The Biography Channel HD, Disney Channel HD, ESPNews HD, Five Star Max, Fox Business Network HD, Fox News Channel HD, FX HD, Hallmark Movie Channel HD, HBO 2 HD, HBO 2 HD (West), HBO Comedy, HBO Comedy West, HBO Family, HBO Family West, HBO Latino, HBO Latino West, HBO Signature, HBO Signature (West), HBO Zone, HBO Zone (West), Mav TV, MGM Channel HD, More Max, More Max West, Outer Max, Planet Green, QVC HD, Sho2 HD, Sho2 HD West, Showtime HD West, Showcase HD East, Showcase HD West, Showtime Extreme East, Showtime Extreme West, Speed HD, Starz Comedy HD , Starz Edge HD , Starz Kids & Family HD, Superstation WGN HD, The Travel Channel HD, Thriller Max, Thriller Max West, TMC HD - West, TMC Xtra East, TMC Xtra West, Toon Disney HD, Wmax, World Fishing Network HD, Animal Planet HD, Big Ten Network HD, CNN HD, Cinemax West HD, HBO West HD, USA HD, Bravo HD, Outdoor Channel 2 HD, Smithsonian HD, TBS HD, The History Channel HD, The Learning Channel HD, The Science Channel HD, The Weather Channel HD, Versus / Golf HD, CNBC HD, SCI FI HD, Lifetime HD East, TNT HDTV, Universal HDTV, HD Net, ESPN HDTV, ESPN2 HDTV, NFL Network HDTV, Discovery Channel HD, National Geographic Channel HD, HD Theater, Lifetime Movie Network HD, Food HD, HGTV HD, Wealth TV HD, A&E HD, MHD, HD Net Movies, Starz HDTV, Showtime HDTV, The Movie Channel HDTV, HBO HDTV, Cinemax HDTV, ABC HD, CBS HD, CW HD, FOX HD, MY NETWORK HD, NBC HD, PBS HD, YES HD, and SportsNet NY HD.

BYE BYE time warner! Manhattanites wont miss you at all!!..in regards to the NFL quarrel with NFLN..RCN initially was here for us.. now Fios will be here to slap you up like the b+++hes like you are!!!

go ahead keep declining channels (NFLN & Big-10), and watch that customer base decline as well!!!as we move towards fiber!

I left you guys back in 2006 for Direct TV, and i havent regretted it once!!! When it downpours rain or thunder & lightning..thats the drawback, but worth every penny for the NFL package..so kiss it!!

FiOS may be a bang-up system, but beware Verizon service. My first appointment, the installers came by too late to install anything, checked out my apt., and we set another date. That date came, I stayed home, they didn't show---and didn't call. We set another date, same deal. They didn't show, didn't call. Three strikes, etc. I canceled my order. So now I'm trading in my DSL for Road Runner. I'd prefer FiOS, because as a writer/researcher I value speed, but I can't afford to miss any more work for these bozos. They've cost me at least a year's subscription fees. Thank you, Verizon. But no thanks.

Dear On line Community and Verizon:

I live in public housing ran by NYCHA. Years ago I have researched RCN when they first came to the city. The problem is they did not come uptown, my last check was they were at 135St. I live in walking distance to Time Warner on 219 Bway. I have fought with mgmt over not having the right to purchase any other company but Time Warner. First TW is expensive, they charge more money for less channels, channel 90 an african american channel much better than BET is no longer included in their basic channels. VH1, BET, MTV constantly freezes. You get a basic at 49.00 but pay about 65.oo when all is said and done. I have tried to get direct tv,but was threatened to have my lease terminated if I dare put it up. NYCHA-Public Housing says its a liability if it falls out the window and hurts someone. I have yet to hear of any lawsuits due to falling satellite dish. In anycase I learned that the NYCHA recieved kickbacks for allowing TW to wire their establishments across the city.

I have been inquiring about Fios with Verizon, but they are not in northern manhattan, and like the others are only in the most affluent neighborhoods. I hope they reach uptown soon in my neighborhood and pray they dont have these teaser rates to draw you in and become just as bad or worse than the company I hate most which is Time Warner. I already have verizon DSL, Phone, and Mobile.

Let me know what you think?

HELP!!! I'M TIRED OF ALL THESE FALSE PROMISES VERIZON SAYING THAT IT WLL BE READY FOR EAST HARLEM. IT'S ONLY AROUND 109TH STREET. I'VE BEEN STUCK WITH TIME WARNER SINCE IT WAS GROUPW CABLE. AND I'M REALLY SICK OF TW BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH SPORTS PROGRAMS LIKE NFLN. THE ROADRUNNER IS A ABSOLUTELY JOKE AND THE PROGRAMS ARE TOTALLY CRAP! I'VE BEEN A FANS OF FIOS PROMO AND NOW IT'S TIME TO PUSH TW OUT THE DOOR FOR GOOD.
