If you're looking for an inexpensive, widescreen portable GPS unit, check out the Magellan RoadMate 1430 ($399.99 list). Craig Ellison of PC Magazine reports that the RoadMate 1430 has features similar to those of Magellan's luxury Maestro models, and is now much easier to use than the budget-minded RoadMate line used to be.
The top-of-the-line RoadMate 1430 includes a live traffic information receiver in addition to its widescreen LCD and six million POI database.
"Perhaps the most welcome similarity between the new RoadMates and their higher-end cousins, however, is that the RoadMates now feature virtually the same menu system found on the Maestros," the review said. "This much-more-intuitive UI has large icons for Show Map, Enter Address, or Points of Interest. A second screen provides access to the trip planner, exit POIs (that is, POIs at exits, such as gas stations, lodging, and restaurants), and the user options (setup) menu. Both screens have a handy Home icon, as well as a tow-truck button that provides your exact location."
Aside from some sluggish response times and the occasional unexplained route recalculation, it performed well in testing. Read the full review at PCMag.com.
