Tesla Motors, the electric Roadster (and soon-to-be-$60,000 sedan) manufacturer, is considering a mass-market electric vehicle in the $30k range, HybridOwnersOfAmerica.org reports. The report said that the car is still in the early planning stages. But an annual output of 200,000 cars is possible, according to one analyst.

Right now, Tesla is planning to build about 1,800 Roadsters and 20,000 of the Whitestar sedans annually; this $30k sedan would be in another league entirely in terms of volume. As Australia's Car Central writes, so far no company has built any significant volume of purely electric vehicles. "Tesla's plans for their third sedan would mark a significant step forward in bringing mass-produced EVs to reality, and would do so over a relatively short development period," the report said.
