Buying a bike can be a lot like buying a suit. You want to make sure it fits you properly, is comfortable for long periods of time, and looks nice. While many people would probably buy both a suit and a bike off the rack, there's a now an option to get as custom a fit for a bike as you can with a suit. And getting custom fitted for a bike has gone very high-tech.
Venture Beat reports that Swiss performance bike maker BMC will use technology from New York-based Organic Motion to capture movement from customers to better customize its bikes for each person. This motion-capture technology uses multiple cameras and software to stitch together a 3D view of a potential rider, rather than the tradition body suits and light-sensitive make-up used to capture motion data.
To get that special fit will involve using 10 high-speed cameras, which cost about $80,000 for the system, and could eventually be deployed at BMC's 250 dealer locations in the U.S. That may sound like a lot of money. But considering that high-end bicycles can cost upwards of $5,000, you can understand why riders want a perfect fit and will pay to get it.
