LeapFrog has four new handheld products launching this summer, all of which will be linked with their new LeapFrog Learning Path Web companion. We covered most of these products in February, after viewing pre-production units at an event at the New Museum, but now these products are ready to hit the shelves. The Tag Reading System was one such product, and we got a look at an early production unit. Its goal is to make reading and learning to read fun and interactive, a way to jazz up your basic book. Kids can read along, have words pronounced for them, play games, and interact with characters right on the page. The Tag Reading System is available now for $49.99 (books are $13.99 list) with free shipping (limited time).
At this most recent event, I got to play around with the Leapster2 and Didj portable gaming systems which are geared toward 4-8 and 6-10 year-olds respectively. The Leapster2 has five new titles, including Disney/Pixar's Wall-E. (Games are $19.99 each.) Conveniently, all titles are compatible with both the original Leapster and Leapster2.
Didj is a bit more advanced and enables kids to create unique avatars and design their own games. The education element can also be customized so kids can focus on a particular subject such as spelling or multiplication--they can even narrow it down to just the 6s time table. Didj games are $29.99 each.
One product I hadn't seen before was the Crammer Study and Sound System. As its name suggests, Crammer is a study tool that helps you memorize information for upcoming tests. What's cool is that you can load any information you want into the device and create your own electronic flashcards. LeapFrog also offers curriculum content for grades 3-8 that can be uploaded for free online. Although the Crammer is geared toward elementary school students, it could ostensibly be used by anyone who needs to memorize a large amount of information regularly--medical students, for example. The Crammer will be available in the fall for $59.99. We will have a hands-on review soon.
The Leapster2 ($69.99 list) and Didj ($89.99 list) will be shipping this summer and are now available for pre-order.
