Iomega today announced a new software that incorporates EMC Retrospect Express and Mozy online backup into a single downloadable bundle.

Beginning today, those who purchase an Iomega eternal hard drive can choose a version of Retrospect Express, and will get 2GB of MozyHome online backup for free or unlimited Mozy backup for $4.95 a month. If you already own an Iomega drive and have downloaded Retrospect, you can upgrade to the latest version, free of charge.

The bundle is available as Retrospect Express HD 2.5 for Windows, Retrospect Express 7.6 for Windows, and Retrospect Express for Macintosh 6. The former two come with Mozy backup. According to representatives at Iomega, the Mac version is coming soon.

"The combination of Iomega external HDDs with Retrospect backup software integrated with Mozy online backup service means storing, protecting and accessing digital files is now easier than ever before," said EMC president consumer and small business products, Jonathan Huberman of the bundle. "Computer users now have a seamless backup system for local backup of every file, as well as backup to the cloud for files that warrant another copy. This bundled solution provides the versatility of any time, anywhere access."

On the subject of file backup, sharing and storage ...

Online backup is becoming common these days. It is estimated that 70-75% of all PC's will be connected to online backup services with in the next decade.

Thousands of online backup companies exist, from one guy operating in his apartment to fortune 500 companies.

Choosing the best online backup company will be very confusing and difficult. One website I find very helpful in making a decision to pick an online backup company is:

http://www.BackupReview.info

This site lists more than 400 online backup companies in its directory and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.

Iomega "ETERNAL" hard drive?

Could you please check this again, did Iomega buy Forest Lawn Mortuary or vice-versa?

Sadly Retrospect manages to break Mozy completely if you upgrade from 2.0 to 2.5. You start getting a message that OEM.DLL cannot be loaded.

When you upgrade Retrospect HD to 2.5 you will need to check the setup, and at the end of that, it will ask you if you want to backup with Mozy. However, it appears to be referring to the 2GB only one, and I have unlimited, so I unchecked the tickbox. There was no explanation of how it might affect an existing installation or whether it would somehow do the unlimited and the 2gb or what.

Anyway, next reboot, Mozy is dead.

Worse - while working on new stuff in Retrospect Express HD and breaking Mozy, they failed to fix the HORRID focus stealing behaviour of Retrospect Express HD.

In case you have the problem with it stealing focus, you can 'fix' it by leaving the Retrospect status window permanently open.

Cheers
Jez

I had to reinstall Mozy and now I dare not go through the Retrospect Express config in case it breaks it again.

Not at all impressed with EMC.
