All is not well on iPhone 3G launch day.

On my way to work this morning, my old reliable iPod video (5G) from 2006 crashed and has yet to re-awaken. A harbinger of things to come?

It seems that Senior Editor Wendy Sheehan-Donnell's old iPhone, which was updated with 2.0 firmware and running new apps smoothly only yesterday is no longer a happy camper, either. It's crashed, and no hard reboots or any of the other standard trick are working.

When I tried to update the firmware on PC Mag's iPod touch, iTunes informed that my request couldn't be completed because "the iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable." And to "Please try again later".

I did. Like, 50 times. No dice.

Now, PC Mag Cell Phone Analyst Sascha Segan is reporting something that seems to be happening nationwide: the inability to activate his iPhone 3G.

From Sascha:

I got the unactivated iPhone, brought it back to the office and plugged it into iTunes. The iPhone pops up in the left hand column of iTunes, but then iTunes gives me an error message. I can't activate the phone, or even use it; the phone just tells me to plug it into iTunes, and iTunes gives me an error. ("An unknown error occurred (-4)") Nothing doing.

And then:

Hey, I just got a different error number! Now it's -3256.

So, my old iPod spookily kicks the bucket on iPhone 3G launch day, Wendy's old iPhone decided to crash after a day of running the 2.0 update, I can't seem to get the 2.0 update on our iPod touch, and Sascha can't activate his iPhone.

We'll let you know when we're actually able to play with the new toys!

Sorry to hear you have had very bad luck today.

My experience went great. I was outside te ATT store in Clarkston Michigan at 6am today and I was 11th person in line. We were all asked for our info by the ATT reps to speed up the proccess. THey informed us we would be let in 9 at a time and there were seven reps. While they were taking out info they asked what model we were after. I said the 16gb black and was given a weird look at first but they came back and told me quietly I was the last 16gb black customer because apple only shipped 10 to this store. We were told there would be no waiving of the upgrade fee on the outside. Once inside my rep informed me that ATT was waiving my fee due to my account being in such good status. I wasnt going to argue. DUring the activation proccess we were told the phones are now active and we would need to take them home to finish the unbricking portion of the activation due to a software issue with the wonderful Itunes. Havent been home yet so I cant tell you if I will be fully activated or not.
