GM and Toyota aren't thrilled about HD radio—in particular, they object to recent suggestions that XM and Sirius should incorporate HD radio into all their satellite receivers, according to a PC Magazine report. Their argument is that the technology is progressing along just fine without a government mandate—but, naturally, not everyone agrees.
"While HD radio is successfully penetrating the marketplace, it is nevertheless still an evolving technology," executives from General Motors and Toyota wrote in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). "Any mandate will inherently distort the normal incentives to cost reduce and further improve the HD product offering."
Meanwhile, Democratic senators John Kerry of Massachusetts, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, and Ben Cardin of Maryland asked that the FCC impose stricter guidelines, including the HD radio requirement, according to the report. "Just as Congress and the FCC have required television receivers to be able to receive all channels, to have built-in digital tuners and to integrate V-chip parental controls, the commission should ensure access to digital radio technology," the senators wrote.
