In a strange turnabout, when General Motors finally unveiled the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Monday afternoon, they featured the car's fuel economy numbers front and center instead of its horsepower figures, as CNNMoney.com reports. The reason? The V6 model is expected to get 26 mpg on the highway. That's not a stellar number by itself, but it's pretty good considering the engine makes 300 horsepower—the same figure the V8 Mustang GT produces.
300 horsepower from a V6 is nothing new. Even normally aspirated blocks have produced as much lately, such as the one in the Lexus IS350 (306 hp), the Cadillac CTS (304 hp), and the Infiniti G37 (330 hp). But it's an interesting idea for a muscle car—a genre typically defined by the size and strength of its engines. That means the V6 version could usher in a new, more socially conscious kind of brute-force performance.
Oh, and if you still want a V8, the 6.2 liter in the Camaro SS will make 422 horsepower when mated to a manual transmission—that one will reportedly get 23 mpg on the highway instead of 26 mpg.
