German automotive supplier Bosch just announced that the company has delivered almost 500,000 start-stop systems for BMW and Mini vehicles in Europe, AutoblogGreen reports. The company also said that three additional manufacturers will introduce the system in the near future, although they didn't say who just yet.

As the report explained, Start/Stop technology shuts down the engine whenever the car is at a standstill, such as when sitting at a red light or when mired in traffic. As soon as the car detects the gas pedal being pressed down, the system instantly powers the engine up again.

Bosch claims their system cuts fuel consumption by up to five percent in the European Driving Cycle, which translates into an eight-percent reduction in CO2 emissions, the report said. The company said that their Start/Stop system can also be used for cold starts in diesel engines.
