In time for the 2008 summer Olympics, GPS device manufacturer Garmin announced the release of City Navigator China NT 2008.
The new app combines millions of points of interest onto a microSD/SD card, which users can plug into a Garmin device. The names of locations are displayed in Pinyin, a popular Latin-alphabet phonetic spelling of the Mandarin language. The maps extend beyond Bejing to more than 980 Chinese cities.
"This new suite of digital maps helps tourists locate stadiums, hotels, restaurants, and more-so they can spend their time being spectators instead of worrying about how to get there," said Garmin VP Dan Bartel. "Presently, Garmin is the only satellite navigation manufacturer that is able to offer these highly-detailed maps."
Garmin is also adding free custom points of interest for Chinese sporting locations in Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, and Qingdao. Users can download that info from Garmin's site.
