I'm lost--a social network around a camera? That's what Crunchgear is reporting at least. Fujifilm has teamed up with Ning.com to create a social network, ZSpotNow.com, based around the Z20fd, a 10-megapixel point-and-shoot with a special blog mode that reduces and resizes images for upload to blogs and email lists. It also records MPEG4 video and can upload directly to YouTube.
Kudos for the special blog mode, as bloggers everywhere I'm sure have been looking for a nice hybrid cam to suit their every needs (and eliminate more equipment in the field). But does the camera really need an entire social network around it? Nikon has had Nikonians for years, but that's around their entire product line and not just around a single camera. Plus, Nikonians is directed more towards professionals and enthusiasts; ZSpotNow seems to be more for the networkers.
Using Ning's new event feature, Fujifilm has scheduled three concerts in Miami, NYC, and Los Angeles. The bands and DJs associated with each event will be encouraged to drop content into the social network and various widgets will spread the good word virally. Users will be able to chat and upload pictures and video from the event. Still though, is that enough to move the first camera I've ever heard of designed and marketed specifically for social networking? It could be--I just wonder what Canon and Panasonic (other companies famous for their point-and-shoots) will do in response.
