Dictionary fanboys rejoice. You're now an official part of the lexicon. Merriam Webster compiled its year list of new words for 2008--the same list that made w00t at least semi-official this time last year.
This time out in the tech category, the dictionary added the aforementioned nickname for brand obsessives, along with malware, pretexting, netroots, and webinar.
The full list of new words is about 100 strong--only a small slice of which is tech. Other favorites include "mondegreen" (a misheard lyric or phrase), "prosecco" (a kind of Italian wine), and "air quotes" (come on, you "know" what air quotes "means").
No word on any reference reprieve for the world's fangirls, however.

ACK. "Webinar?" Damn if that's a word that just needs to stay out of the English language. Fanboy I can understand - that's pretty lame on Fangirl - and Malware makes sense (maybe spellcheck will stop complaining when I write "malware"), but Webinar? Bleh.
